Gender Justice for Whom? Domestic Accountability for Conflict-Related Sexual Violence
“I am convinced that peace can be achieved through justice.”
Judge Barrios Aguilar, The High-Risk Court of Guatemala
The book manuscript examines different patterns of accountability for conflict-related sexual violence adopted by civil wars-affected governments. This book proposes how legislative and judicial accountability as a strategy to restore reputation and moral image during and after civil wars serve different purposes. While legislative accountability is adopted by governments to frame accountability around prevention and conceal past conflict-related sexual violence, judicial accountability allows them to distance from violence by selectively punishing perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence.
